Challenge
The Millennium Al Rawdah Hotel, a spectacular 281-room property in Abu Dhabi, was reliant on LPG fuel for all its cooling and heating needs. It was a fossil-fuel dependence involving annual consumption of 36,000 litres of LPG and was costing the hotel around € 10,000 a month in energy bills.
The hotel had already rented equipment from Trane in the past. They were eager to learn how the installation of a water-to-water heat pump could help them become more sustainable and massively cut their energy costs. The switch to innovative heat pump technology under a Trane EaaSy rental contract would enable the hotel to fulfil its sanitary water heating and air conditioning requirements at vastly reduced operating cost.
Solution
The Trane Rental Services team in Abu Dhabi demonstrated that the hotel could make savings over 70% a year by installing a water-to-water heat pump. The installation of a water-to-water heat pump City™ RTSF 060 would supplement the capacity of its on-site chiller with heating capacity of 193kW and cooling capacity of 130kW.
The Trane water-to-water heat pumps City™ RTSF have been designed to reduce environmental impact and offer an industry-leading 99.5% reliability rate with screw compressor technology and Adaptive Frequency™ Drive as standard. It’s fully optimized for HFO R1234ze, with a near-zero GWP. Rental would mean zero capital investment for the hotel while producing immediate savings and facilitating a valuable system upgrade.
The RTSF 060 heat pump was installed on the hotel roof and now sits alongside the hotel’s rented chiller. Power provision was unavailable near the hot water system so the electrical infrastructure was modified with rental cables to source the power from the basement to the roof.
Results
The hotel is now making annual savings of nearly 200,000 dirhams (€ 51,000) – an improvement of 73% on its LPG spend.

This initial rental period is for three years under a Trane EaaSy contract. EaaSy stands for “Equipment-as-a-Service” and it’s a formula that provides a host of benefits for customers.
