Challenge
A prestigious women's hospital in Abu Dhabi faced the challenge of finding a sustainable and energy-efficient solution to supply its hot and cold sanitary water requirements with one single unit.
With a focus on maternity and neo-natal care, the 180-room facility aimed to enhance its sanitary water installation by replacing its existing two separate systems for domestic hot water and cold water – a boiler for heating and a chiller for cooling. The hospital sought a more sustainable and economical heat pump solution that would not only supply all their temperature needs and reduce its carbon footprint but also provide a wider temperature range. The current cooling temperature of 23°C needed to be lowered to 18°C, while the hot water temperature of 52°C needed to be increased to 60°C.
Solution
Trane Rental Services addressed the hospital's requirements and offered a comprehensive turnkey solution including:
• 2 x water-to-water heat pumps City RTSF 070, along with
• All the necessary accessories such as plate heat exchangers, pumps, and cables.
The heat pumps have been installed alongside the existing boiler and chiller in the hospital's plant room.
The RTSF heat pumps offer a unique opportunity to move to renewable energy heating. Operation and efficiency have been optimized to deliver the requested hot water temperature at 60°C.
The hospital reduces its energy costs by harnessing the available heat energy and maximizing its usage. The heat recovery module extracts energy from the cooling process to reuse it for heating the domestic water. This is free heating.
Results
During the initial trial phase of the project, which will span one month, the effectiveness of the two City RTSF heat pumps in achieving the desired temperatures will be thoroughly tested. Upon successful completion of this phase, the rental solutionis will probably be implemented for a period of 12 months, completely replacing the existing hot and cold water systems.
At Trane Rental Services, we view cooling and heating as services rather than products. This unique perspective allows us to assess systems holistically and identify every opportunity to save on energy consumption. We know the outstanding benefits of adopting a combined heating and cooling approach, as it can significantly reduce both energy usage and carbon footprint. By embracing this approach, our customers can enjoy substantial energy savings while contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
