Challenge

A leading Turkish telecoms company and network operator was aiming to install new chillers at its large data center in Istanbul. The company provides mobile, landline, broadband and data services to millions of customers across Turkey.

The customer was looking for a chiller solution at its data center that would be extremely efficient, even at part load, and could offer robust, powerful and reliable performance. The company also required timely delivery and the reassurance of excellent service from its solution provider. They had no previous experience with Trane products at the data center and the first phase of the system had been provided by a Trane competitor. This meant that Trane had to truly excel in offering a better, more efficient system and improved levels of customer service going forward.

Solution

Trane worked very closely with the project designer, the contractor and the customer during the design phase to devise the ideal solution. Trane effectively became a “solution partner.” The process involved changing some design parameters and making amendments to the customer specifications in order to come up with the most appropriate system given the customer’s requirements.

Trane recommended the installation of 2 x RTAF High Seasonal Efficiency 280 chiller units with Total Free Cooling.

The RTAF air-cooled chillers feature many innovative features to reach exceptional energy efficiency:
• Adaptive Frequency Drive along with
• EC condenser fans
• Trane screw compressor with Variable Volume Index
• Reduced refrigerant charge through microchannel condenser coils and optimized refrigeration circuit

The integrated Free Cooling system allows for even greater energy savings taking advantage of low ambient conditions to help cool water in your HVAC system. The solution significantly lowers operating costs and reduces wear and tear of main system components.

Results

The Trane system has significantly helped reduce the carbon footprint associated with the project. Exceptional efficiency means less energy consumed and lower electricity bills. The customer was aiming for a minimum of 1.3 pPUE (partial Power Usage Efficiency) and Trane has been able to deliver lower than the customer target value. This equates to a saving over 10% on energy consumption.

Trane has built up a strong working relationship with the telecom company and has also undertaken a three-year maintenance contract to service the new system. This was Trane’s first data center project solution for this customer and it has gone extremely well. The online factory tests recorded higher values than expected at full and part load capacities. A Rapid Start Test was also performed with great success. The dozen representatives from the contractor and customer company who attended the online test were impressed and very satisfied with the results.
