Challenge
A large multi-national data center organisation with facilities all over Europe was seeking a replacement for its existing chiller system at a site in France. The company required a free cooling option and excellent energy efficiency as part of the solution. The customer also needed it to be “business as usual” during installation without any interruption to operations.
Initially, the company was keen to stay with its existing, long-term supplier and it was up to Trane application experts to demonstrate that Trane’s innovative technology equipment would provide the customer with unrivalled performance, reduced energy costs and robust reliability.
Solution
The local Trane Sales Engineer team liaised closely with several different interested parties at the data center including the design office, the general contractor and the end user. Trane’s recommended solution was for:
• 3 x air-cooled maglev compressor GVAF 140 XSE chillers, each providing 456kW at 43°C ambient temperature with
• Pumps and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) backed with Trane Symbio™ 800 controller
• Total Free Cooling Direct
• 2 x Trane Rental air-cooled Sintesis Prime RTAF chillers for a 6-month period for the replacement of the existing failed chillers to keep the data center fully operational.
Sintesis eXcellent GVAF has been developed for the most mission critical data center applications. This best-in-class Sintesis chiller utilises near-zero GWP R1234ze refrigerant and offers the best certified seasonal efficiencies of the industry, a wide capacity range and strong operating maps (max ambient up to +46°C with full load).

Results
The customer is fully satisfied with his selection of the most efficient equipment on the market with the fast restart option. Prompt delivery along with a very high-quality and reliable Trane Rental solution were other strong differentiators.
Trane is able to carry out the installation without any interruption to data center operations thanks to the installation of the temporary Trane Rental solution.
