Challenge

An organic fertilizer manufacturer in Dubai was seeking a solution for stationary cold storage of additives & chemicals at -18°C. The company had no on-site facility that could store materials at sufficiently low temperatures. Instead, the customer was having to utilize cold storage facilities at other sites that it owned elsewhere.

The process of transporting materials on and off-site was inconvenient, inefficient and costly. There were numerous other disadvantages to sharing the cold storage with a partner site and, once its materials were there, not having any control over the facility. The fertilizer additives and chemicals needed to be stored at a constant low temperature of -18°C. This was crucial. However, the off-site cold storage unit was also being used by others which meant the doors were frequently being opened and closed. This was causing a problematic and risky fluctuation in temperature. Furthermore, the customer needed to ensure stringent hygiene standards for its materials however it was not possible to control hygiene levels at the off-site facility. Finally, each time that goods needed to be transported to or from another location, the customer needed to apply for a special permit.

Solution

Trane’s rental team carried out multiple site visits and engaged in in-depth discussions with the customer’s facility engineers to determine their real needs. It was clear that the customer needed to bring its cold storage capability in-house. However, rather than opting for a stationary warehousing solution, Trane recommended the rental of a brand new, containerized cold storage unit. The customer was invited to visit Trane’s premises in person and view the unit’s performance under test conditions.

Convinced with the performance and efficiency of the 20' cold store they were able to witness, one cold store was ordered and installed on the customer site.

Results

The customer was impressed by the unit’s performance and the comprehensive rental services offered by Trane. The on-site cold storage facility would ensure the customer had easy access to its materials at all times and was no longer dependent on external facilities. It was able to make significant savings on the associated costs of transporting the materials to and from the off-site storage. The customer could also ensure that accurate low temperatures of -18°C were maintained along with sufficient hygiene levels to avoid the risk of contamination.
