Challenge
Paradise Island, the latest highlight at HolstenTherme in Kaltenkirchen, located about 20 kilometers north of Hamburg, spans an area of roughly 2,000 square meters. This wellness haven accommodates 300 visitors daily, offering two pools and a dining area with 60 seats. The ambient and water temperature is maintained at a balmy 32°C. Air conditioning a thermal spa presents unique challenges: each zone – swimming area, dining, changing rooms, and foyer – demands specific humidity and temperature settings. Additionally, the system must be exceptionally energy-efficient.
Solution
HolstenTherme opted for the bespoke AL-KO AT4 Air Handling Units: three units ensure optimal air quality and comfort in Paradise Island. An AT4 unit, designed to handle an air volume of 6,000 m3/h for both supply and exhaust air, and compliant with VDI 2052 standards, serves the dining area. Dual filtration stages in the supply air maintain high hygiene standards for food handling. A grease trap filter in the exhaust air captures grease particles before they reach the main filter. The exhaust air fan motor is housed in a ventilated enclosure outside the air flow, adhering to VDI 6022 standards. Another AT4 unit, managing up to 11,000 m3/h of air, serves the adjacent rooms. Both units are installed within the new building. An outdoor AT4 Complete unit (air volume 35,000 m3/h) ensures the bathing zone remains within the comfort zone. The swimming pool design features a specially coated and sealed heat exchanger (WRG), and the ventilation system is double powder-coated internally to prevent corrosion.
Results
The advanced heat recovery system, coupled with modern drive and control technology, guarantees high energy efficiency and cost-effective operation of the entire system.
