Challenge
Sint Jorisplein in the city centre of Amersfoort is home to a combination of shops and apartments. The air conditioning installations for the stores are divided into clusters, each with its own cooling system. However, it no longer functioned everywhere. Temporary replacement was needed for the retail properties with failed refrigeration.
Jacob Middel of CRMD property management: "We are now working on making the air conditioning system of the shopping center more sustainable. But a rental solution was needed to bridge the gap. I had good contact with Trane Rental. They offered a creative custom solution including project organization."
The challenge was to find a location for the rented cooling machines on 'private property', i.e. at store level. The fact that people live above the shops had to be taken into account.
Solution
In an empty shop on the ground floor, Trane Rental installed two City RTSF chillers, three air handling units (as a dry cooler to dissipate the heat) and a 1000-litre buffer tank. To control the hot water side of the RTSF chillers, the air handling units were fitted with Trane BAS controls. Ventilation hoses ran from the air handling units to grilles installed by Trane Rental in the store's façade.
Holes were drilled so that the water hoses of the RTSFs could reach the existing technical rooms, located on levels -1 and -2 of the car park. There, the Trane Rental system, including a replacement pump, was connected to the customer system.
Trane Rental had already completed replacement cooling for another part of the stores: with a Trane CXAF that could stand in a courtyard. The hoses from the CXAF air-to-water heat pump went through drilled holes to a 3000 liter buffer tank in the parking garage. Then the cooling system was split up for connection into two technical rooms.
Results
The Sint Jorisplein stores where the old refrigeration had broken down were successfully temporarily cooled by Trane Rental and the new permanent HVAC system of the Sint Jorisplein shopping center is now in operation with five brand new Trane City RTSF 090 water-cooled chillers.
