
Challenge
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service facility in Brisbane needed a reliable, year-round cooling solution to support its 24/7 operation. Maintaining consistent conditions was critical, while also reducing energy use, lowering operating costs, and meeting increasingly stringent benchmarks for energy efficiency and carbon reduction.
A key priority was to make effective use of solar power as part of a more sustainable and cost-efficient approach. The project called for a modern, future-ready solution that would support environmental stewardship, improve comfort, and enhance operational resilience.
Solution
Trane delivered a permanent, eco-friendly solution that combines solar power, ice thermal storage, and advanced HVAC technology to support the facility's operational and sustainability goals. Acting as a one-stop-shop provider, Trane supplied the chillers, ice-making controls, and ice tanks, along with the product and controls expertise needed to size the system for the sites' requirements.
The installed system included 10 x Trane Calmac Ice Tanks, 1 x RTAF Screw Brine Chiller, and 2 x RTAG Screw Chillers under a purchase contract structure. The system combines 2 standard chillers with 1 brine chiller operating at -5°C to make ice. During the day, the tanks freeze using solar energy, and later the stored ice melts to help maintain conditions in the blood bank.
This installation represented the first global ice tank solution powered by solar energy to make ice, making it a truly unique application, creating a highly resilient cooling system for a critical healthcare environment. By integrating solar energy, thermal storage, and advanced chiller technology, Trane delivered a long-term solution that improved energy efficiency, reduced power use, and provided dependable cooling.
Results
The project delivered a more energy-efficient solution while replacing outdated plant infrastructure. The use of solar powered ice storage and advanced chiller technology helped reduce power consumption and lower operating costs, while supporting the sites' sustainability goals.
The customer was very happy with the outcome, highlighting both the performance of the system and the value of the overall solution. The project also earned recognition from the Green Building Council of Australia for its sustainable excellence.
This installation now stands as a strong example of how innovative cooling solutions can support healthcare operations with greater efficiency, resilience, and environmental responsibility.
