Air-Cooled Chillers

Air-cooled chillers reject heat to the outside air. They serve many building types; the models below are those relevant to data centre chilled water production.

GVWF

Sintesis™ Excellent GVAF
The GVAF air-cooled chiller delivers 400 to 1,600 kW using magnetic bearing, oil-free centrifugal compressors, and runs on low-GWP refrigerant R1234ze. A data centre version is available with integrated high-capacity free cooling, a built-in ATS, a UPS for the controls and rapid restart capability, which keep the unit available through power disturbances.

RTAF

Sintesis™ Prime RTAF
The RTAF air-cooled chiller delivers 300 to 2,090 kW using Trane-designed and manufactured screw compressors. For data centre chilled water production it offers rapid restart, free cooling and heat recovery.

Tip: Raising the chilled water set point within ASHRAE guidance is one of the lowest-cost efficiency measures available to an existing site, and it extends free cooling hours across the year.

Water-Cooled Chillers

Water-cooled chillers reject heat through a cooling tower or similar and suit larger loads where water is available. Like air-cooled chillers, they serve applications well beyond data centres.

GVWF

XStream™ Excellent GVWF
The GVWF water-cooled chiller delivers 350 to 2,530 kW using a high-speed centrifugal compressor with magnetic bearings. The GVWF 620 XSE G is optimised for data centre applications, with a SEER of 10.43 and an evaporator leaving water temperature of up to 30 °C – warmer water extends free cooling hours and raises the temperature of recoverable heat. Fast restart and UPS connection are available as options.

CVHH

Series E™ CenTraVac™ – CVHH and CDHH
Trane CenTraVac water-cooled chillers deliver 3,000 to 14,000 kW for large thermal loads and use low-GWP refrigerant R1233zd. Rapid restart returns the unit to duty after a power failure. The centrifugal compressors achieve the industry’s highest design reliability rating of 99.7 percent.

Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAH) and Fan Wall Units (FWU)

In an air-cooled hall, a chiller plant supplies chilled water to CRAH or fan wall units, which deliver conditioned air to the racks. Containment matters as much as the equipment: air that mixes before it reaches the rack is cooling you have paid for but not used.

CRAH

Trane CRAH units are available in upflow, downflow, high version and downflow raised floor configurations, the last in single-sided or all-sided versions, with capacities from 9 to 250 kW. Pressure-independent energy valves hold supply air temperature steady as load changes.

FAN WALL

Trane Fan Wall Units cover 80 to 600 kW and are built for large and hyperscale halls. They need no raised floor, only a hot aisle, which makes them worth considering where floor void is limited or a retrofit rules a raised floor out.

Liquid Cooling and Coolant Distribution Units (CDU)

Above roughly 30 kW per rack, liquid cooling brings coolant directly to the processor and allows warmer facility water, which extends free cooling hours and raises the temperature of recoverable heat.

A coolant distribution unit separates the facility water circuit from the IT circuit, controls flow and temperature, and filters the coolant to the tolerances server manufacturers require. Trane's CDUs are developed in collaboration with LiquidStack, a specialist in liquid cooling.

CDU 1MW

LiquidStack CDU-1MW
The LiquidStack CDU-1MW provides 1,000 to 1,350 kW of direct-to-chip cooling. It is designed to maintain cooling through maintenance activities and power transitions.

GigaModular CDU 14MW

LiquidStack GigaModular™ CDU-14MW
The LiquidStack GigaModular™ CDU-14MW delivers 2,500 to 14,000 kW for hyperscale and colocation facilities. Its modular design let you expand cooling capacity in phases without disrupting existing operations, so cooling investment can track AI and HPC capacity as it grows.

LiquidStack’s GigaModular™ CDU is among the first offerings to qualify as an NVIDIA DSX Ready CDU, helping AI factory builders select liquid-cooling infrastructure with greater confidence.

Heat Recovery and High-Temperature Heat Pumps

Heat is an unavoidable by-product of a data centre, and it can also be a resource. Chillers with integrated heat recovery capture waste heat directly, and high-temperature heat pumps raise it to a temperature useful elsewhere.

Before you specify: Heat recovery only pays back where there is somewhere for the heat to go. Establish a viable offtaker within economic pipe distance before making any equipment decision.

RTSF

City™ RTSF HT
The City™ RTSF HT high-temperature water-to-water heat pump delivers 100 to 370 kW of heating and raises water temperature up to 110 °C, making it suitable for district heating networks, nearby buildings and industrial processes. It uses R1233zd(E), an ultra-low-GWP refrigerant in safety class A1.

RTSF

XStream™ RTWF HT
The XStream™ RTWF HT water-to-water heat pump delivers 400 kW to 1.5 MW heating, with leaving water temperatures up to 105 °C. The platforms offers a wide variety of water flow, source side temperature, and approach temperature options.
