The Trend of Magnetic Levitation in HVAC and Data Centers

Magnetic levitation units are becoming a significant trend in the technological evolution of the HVAC and data center sectors. This innovative compressor technology replaces mechanical bearings with magnetic fields, eliminating mechanical friction and resulting in improved efficiency.

Pedro Fernandes, commercial director of Trane Portugal, explains that the drive for greater energy efficiency, sustainability, and reliability is propelling this technological advancement.

What are magnetic levitation units and what are they used for?
Magnetic levitation units use compressors with 'magnetic bearings,' allowing internal components to 'levitate' and eliminating physical contact between moving parts. This brings several advantages, including the elimination of oil lubrication, variable speed operation, noise reduction, environmental sustainability, and significant weight reduction. These units are particularly beneficial in large installations, such as data centers, where efficiency and reliability are crucial.

How can the use of magnetic levitation units contribute to this evolution and improve energy efficiency?
The adoption of magnetic levitation technology is growing due to its operational and environmental benefits and competitive pricing. This technology enables high seasonal efficiency levels (SSER) and is becoming a requirement in some applications, especially data centers. Manufacturers are developing specific units for data centers that include additional features like free cooling and UPS connections.

What is already being applied in the market and in which areas?
Several units are already in operation, particularly in sectors where energy efficiency, sustainability, and reliability are highly valued. Trane has installed chillers in major data centers and industrial clients in Portugal, with units ranging from 400 kW to 4 MW. The results have been positive, showing significant improvements in energy efficiency, reduced maintenance costs, quiet operation, and environmental sustainability with the use of low GWP refrigerants like R1234ze and R1233zd.

How is Trane investing to drive the market towards magnetic levitation?
Trane continues to invest in research and development to enhance the efficiency and reliability of magnetic levitation compressors. Positive results in Europe suggest that Portugal will also benefit from this technology. Trane offers both traditional chillers and those with magnetic levitation compressors, allowing customers to choose the best solution for their needs. The company prioritizes continuous innovation to minimize the environmental impact of its HVAC systems and help companies achieve ambitious environmental goals.

Looking ahead in 2025?
Looking ahead, Trane sees significant potential for this technology in transforming energy efficiency and sustainability in critical sectors. The focus will be on large buildings and high-tech industries where energy concerns are paramount. Effective communication of the long-term benefits and return on investment of innovative technologies is essential to encourage adoption. Many building owners want efficiency but are hesitant to pay more for it, making it crucial to highlight the long-term advantages and ROI.
