Challenge
A large hospital in Sardinia with over 240 beds required a new comfort heating and cooling system for their renovation and extension project . The building includes operating theaters and laboratory rooms housing MRI scanners and other cutting edge technological equipment.
In addition, the customer was also interested in replacing old fossil-fuelled boilers with a low-emissions solution to keep its carbon footprint to a minimum.
Solution
Trane's proposal was a fully-electric combination of three multi-pipe units (CMAF model) and 2 heat pumps (CXAF model) to fulfil the entire cooling and heating requirements of the new building. This is the ideal solution for the healthcare facility with regular simultaneous cooling and heating demand in addition to high heating demand. The CMAF units provide cooling in the operating theatres and MRI room. The recovered heat is repurposed for post-heating coils of the AHUs used for patients and employee comfort.
The sizeable hospital building extension is heated solely by Trane units – and no gas boilers. The new Trane Adaptive Refrigerant System™, a proprietary technology providing the widest heating operating map for air-to-water heat pump, was one of the key differentiators for the hospital.
Results
The renovated and extended hospital was inaugurated with success. Trane HVAC expertise ensures optimal comfort for the facility patients and over 500 employees.
Sintesis Balance CMAF and Sintesis Advantage CXAF leverage over a century of Trane expertise in creating efficient chillers, heat pumps and other HVAC equipment. These units bring these competencies to the electrification of the heating market.
Complementing our full portfolio of chillers, heat pumps and multi-pipe units, the CMAF was designed as an innovative, emission-free heating and cooling system that leverages renewable technology, full heat recovery and repurposing of that heat.
The innovative Trane Sintesis Balance™ multi-pipe units provide simultaneous heating and cooling. They can provide leaving hot water temperatures up to +68°C and are designed to provide heating with ambient air temperatures down to -18°C. Combined with their high level of efficiency – with Total Efficiency Ratios up to 8.1 – and their really competitive price, Sintesis Balance is the right investment for many healthcare buildings.
