Challenge

GRIDX, Europe’s first multi‑experience destination in Luxembourg, brings together digital art, gastronomy, craftsmanship, retail, hospitality, mobility, and business activities in one dynamic location. With such a diverse mix of spaces—including a hotel, fitness center, food service areas, and a hospitality school—the site faces highly varied and continuous heating and cooling demands. Maintaining comfort across all these environments requires a solution that can handle simultaneous heating and cooling, reuse energy efficiently, meet strict noise requirements, and significantly reduce reliance on gas while supporting the development’s sustainability goals.

Solution

Trane partnered closely with the GRIDX project team from the study phase through full implementation. Together, they developed a system designed around heat recovery and energy optimization that included:
• Water to water heat pumps to capture and reuse heat for other parts of the facility.
• Chillers with energy recovery to handle the extensive cooling demands.
• Strategic installation of additional heat pumps outdoors to further reduce reliance on gas boilers.
• Carefully selected units that met strict outdoor noise requirements.
• A fully integrated energy transfer strategy allowing heat generated from cooling processes to be reused efficiently for domestic hot water and heating needs.

Trane supplied a complete equipment package tailored for efficiency and versatility. This combination allowed the team to maximize energy recovered from cooling operations—particularly beneficial since several areas, such as the fitness center, demand cooling year round. The reclaimed heat is then delivered where it is needed most, such as the hotel’s continuous domestic hot water supply.

Results

With the system now installed and operating as designed, GRIDX is positioned to achieve:
• Significant reductions in gas consumption, thanks to heat pumps and optimized energy transfer.
• Lower CO₂ emissions, aligning with the project’s sustainability goals.
• Improved overall energy efficiency, with heating and cooling delivered simultaneously using shared resources.
• Reliable thermal comfort across all building zones, regardless of varying or continuous loads.
• Quiet operation that respects environmental noise constraints for the surrounding area.
• A robust, transparent, collaborative installation, delivered with full alignment between Trane and the GRIDX project team.

The result is a highly efficient, resilient HVAC system that supports the unique demands of Europe’s first multi experience destination—ensuring guests, tenants, and operators benefit from optimized comfort and sustainable performance every day.
