Challenge
A pharmaceuticals company in the north-east of the UK needed an urgent cooling solution after their permanent chiller broke down. The company produces patient-specific doses of radiopharmaceuticals. These are substances which are attracted to specific organs, bones, or tissues to enable highly accurate cancer scans. The amount of radiopharmaceutical used is carefully selected for each patient to provide the least amount of radiation exposure while also producing a high-quality result.
The company supplies products for around 200-300 patients a day so any disruption to production has a real impact on patient care. The plant is operational 24/7 and requires cooling at a temperature of 6°C. The radioactivity starts decreasing as soon as products are dispatched so these need to reach patients as swiftly as possible.
Solution
The Trane Rental team was able to supply a chiller CXAF100 unit to ensure production continued without interruption. The rental unit provided the customer with around 230kW of cooling capacity. The initial rental period for up to 20 weeks. In addition, the team also provided a generator for the customer’s power supply – this was on hire for six weeks and included fuel management.
Results
The customer’s original single-circuit chiller is likely beyond repair and also uses a refrigerant that is being phased out. The new rented scroll chiller provides far higher efficiency and more accurate load control. It is expected that the customer will now look to purchase a new chiller or extend the rental period. The broad range of the Trane Rental fleet means Trane has the flexibility to meet client’s requirements whatever the need.
