A large shopping mall on the outskirts of Istanbul needed to replace its ageing chillers with far more energy-efficient and reliable units. Their existing chillers were inefficient, frequently in need of repair and were proving very costly to maintain.
The mall has a strict environmental target in place for reducing its carbon footprint and was looking to achieve significant energy savings without huge capital expenditure. In addition to hundreds of retail outlets, dozens of restaurants and cafes, a cinema and a hypermarket, the mall includes 15,000 square metre of office space.
A further challenge for the customer was that installation of the new units would need to take place at night when the mall is closed. This would require permissions from the local authorities – including traffic control - for loading and unloading the trucks and the use of a crane. The mall operators also required a solution that could be implemented promptly to make certain there was adequate and reliable cooling during the hot months of summer.
Trane Rental recommended the installation of four CXAF heat pumps to provide sustainable and reliable cooling and heating, all year round. The four units provide a total of 3.3 MWh of cooling capacity and 4.0 MWh of heating demand. CXAF heat pumps are compact and offer the very latest air-sourced renewable technology, providing high efficiency at both full load and part load.
The Turkish Rental team was able to utilize Trane Building Advantage EaaSy calculation tool to demonstrate the clear benefits that would derive from replacing the old chillers with new rental units. The customer opted for a Trane EaaSy rental contract – rather than outright purchase – so that it could avoid upfront costs and take advantage of the included maintenance and service benefits that come with the Trane EaaSy service.
The replacement of the existing chillers with the new units took place late at night to keep disruption to an absolute minimum. A large team of Trane Rental installation experts and engineers were on hand to manage and supervise the operation which had to adhere to a strict timeline.
The replacement of the old chillers with the CXAF heat pumps has provided substantial environmental improvements. The energy efficiency index for cooling has increased by 67% and it is estimated that energy saving from the heating system will be around 52%. There will be an overall reduction in the mall’s carbon footprint of some 100 tonnes a year – 55 tonnes from cooling and 45 from heating.
The customer opted initially for a five-year Trane EaaSy rental contract and this will eventually be extended to 15 years.
