Challenge

A major data center in Frankfurt faced rising heat loads as the number of server racks continued to grow, outpacing the cooling capacity of infrastructure designed more than a decade ago. Especially during the summer months, the existing cooling capacity was not sufficient, requiring a high‑capacity, fully internal cooling installation that could be deployed under strict security protocols and a very tight timeline.

With an estimated 6 MW of cooling needed to support redundancy chillers and ensure stable operations, the data center turned to Trane for a rental cooling solution that would safeguard uptime during periods of peak demand.

Solution

Trane deployed a tailored 6 MW rental cooling solution consisting of seven Trane RTAF 245 screw‑compressor chillers and 30 AL-KO air handlers of 150 kW each to effectively distribute cool air throughout the building. The installation required 11 km of cabling, 5 km of hoses, and a coordinated on‑site team of ten specialists working within the secure facility. Additional capacity of 1 MW was included to ensure redundancy throughout the rental period. The system is supporting the site’s redundancy chillers and reflects the growing partnership, as the customer has increased the number of Trane units on‑site year over year. The customer chose Trane because of its ability to provide the full range of equipment, deliver excellent work, offer reliability, and ensure smooth implementation.

Results

With the temporary system in place, the data center secured uninterrupted operations, with the flexibility to extend support as needed during periods of increased cooling demand. The flexible, climate‑resilient setup provides the cooling capacity needed to meet rising temperatures and increased IT demand, demonstrating effective planning and business protection.

The project strengthens Trane’s position as a trusted provider for future capacity and rental needs. As Sales Engineer Georgios Loukas noted: “This project shows how the right temporary cooling strategy can keep mission‑critical operations protected. The combination of high‑capacity chillers and precise air distribution made it possible to secure operations without disruption.”
