Challenge
Right in the heart of Hamburg's popular HafenCity district lies ROOTS, a unique high-rise building that combines wood, glass, and natural light. Standing at 65 meters tall with 19 floors and constructed using over 5,500 m3 of softwood, this environmentally friendly building creates a particularly healthy indoor climate for its 181 residential units and office spaces.
Building the tallest wooden high-rise in Germany comes with unique challenges, particularly when it comes to ensuring a sustainable and healthy indoor environment. The ventilation system must meet special requirements to provide efficient air circulation while withstanding the demanding conditions of the harbor air, including high humidity and fine dust.
Solution
AL-KO Air Technology has designed a custom-made ventilation system for ROOTS, the groundbreaking eco-housing project.
Four units of the AL-KO AT4 series have been utilized to circulate an impressive total air volume of 42,000 m3/h. These units boast energy-saving fans and highly efficient heat recovery systems, operating at the highest efficiency class A+. To further maximize resource efficiency, the system will be integrated into the building management system. Fine dust filters are also in place to prevent harmful particles, such as ship exhaust fumes, from entering the building.
Results
Despite the harsh environment, the installation of the air handling system on the roof of the high-rise building has been seamless. The galvanized and powder-coated casing delivers the highest corrosion protection, ensuring the system's longevity. Additionally, the AL-KO AT4 units feature proprietary housing panels with non-combustible acoustic and thermal insulation material, guaranteeing optimal thermal decoupling between the inner and outer shells, thus preventing heat loss.
With its state-of-the-art AL-KO AT4 ventilation system, ROOTS is a groundbreaking architectural project that not only serves as a symbol of sustainable and energy-efficient construction but also as a model for energy-efficient ventilation solutions.
