The developers of the Beursplein Tiel residential complex in Amsterdam were looking for a highly energy-efficient HVAC solution to provide year-round heating, cooling and hot sanitary water to the 104 apartments.

Sustainability was key to the project. The use of reliable, robust and cost-effective solutions with low energy consumption – to keep costs down for residents – was a critical factor. Heat pumps offering more efficient and sustainable solutions than the traditionally used gas boilers were the required systems to be delivered as a 'Climate as a Service' concept.


Through the Dutch energy service company Esco Celsias and Sweco, one of Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy firm, Trane was selected to provide an energy-efficient and sustainable solution.

Energy performance for revenue model.

Hot sanitary water production from 16 °C to 60 °C

Trane provided two water-to-water heat pumps RTSF 070 with Adaptive Frequency™ Drive as standard and climate-friendly refrigerant R1234ze which has a near-zero GWP. The project also included multi-pipe heat pumps and the use of solar panels as well as Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) to provide separate hot and cold water sources.

The RTSF heat pumps supply heating and cooling as well as hot tap water to each apartment. Water is supplied from the ATES groundwater aquifers at 15 to 17 °C. The Trane RTSF units pump the water and releases it to the needed temperature levels:
• 60 °C for hot tap water all year round
• 35°C for the underfloor heating in winter
•16°C to 17 °C for cooling in summer.

The RTSF heat pumps ensure that the needed water temperature is always available in the buffer tanks to guarantee continuity of supply to each apartment. The heat pumps provide all the capacity that would traditionally have been provided by a central heating boiler – but without the need to rely on fossil fuels.

The compact size of the Trane RTSF was another crucial selection factor for this project.
Marcel Barnhoorn empahsizes "It is always challenging to accommodate the necessary technology in the technical room. Relying on a supplier that offers compact machines like the Trane City RTSF proves to be highly beneficial."


The high-quality apartment complex of Beursplein in Tiel was developed by Reales and completed in May 2023. It consists of two residential towers, connected by an underground parking garage and lies close to the historic and newly renovated Beursplein Square.

Trane came highly recommended by Sweco engineering consultancy firm that has positive experience with Trane. Celsias was not only responsible for the installed solution but is also the energy supplier for the building so the quality of the heat pumps was very important. Marcel Barnhoorn, Director of Celsias, added:
