A major European car manufacturer was in the process of constructing a new building to produce batteries at its plant in Germany. The customer wanted to ensure that production could start as soon as possible once the building was completed and required a temporary process cooling solution to cover the interim period before a permanent cooling system could be installed.

The factory requires high cooling capacity of 5000 kW across two separate areas – one area providing temperatures of 6°C to 12°C and the other providing temperatures of 18°C to 24°C.

One of the biggest challenges of the wholly new operation project was to provide the right rental system with very little data available on the new installation.


Working closely with the customer’s HVAC contractor, the local Trane Rental Services team devised a system to provide the required capacity using just five different units:

• 1 x air-cooled screw chiller RTAC 350
covers the area requiring the 6°C to 12°C temperature range.
• 2 x air-cooled screw chillers RTAF 245 and
• 2 x air-cooled screw chillers RTAC 200
to cover the other area of the new factory requiring temperatures of 18°C to 24°C.

These units have been designed with highly robust components. They offer high reliability coupled with excellent energy efficiency, reduced physical footprint, and very quiet operation.


The German team was able to successfully source the ideal units with the required capacity for the large-scale project.

As the plant is a very busy site with a lot of traffic, delivery had to take place over the weekend with the chillers installed using cranes on the factory rooftop. The customer chose Trane Rental Services for our technical expertise and long-term relationship with the contractor.
