Challenge
A major airport in Northern Africa required a high-performance HVAC solution for its main terminal which was due for a major renovation to expand to 30000 m² to serve 6 million passengers annually.
The facility demanded reliable, energy-efficient cooling capable of supporting high-occupancy zones while maintaining strict indoor air quality and comfort standards for passengers and staff. With multiple competitors also pursuing the project, the customer needed a proven international HVAC partner with the technical capability and operational credibility to coordinate with multiple contractors and deliver in a demanding airport environment.
Solution
The initial specifications were 7 MW of comfort cooling using air-cooled chillers and electric heaters at the terminals for heating.
Trane MEA experts engineered a unique alternative cooling and heating solution to meet the airport’s operational and performance requirements, and that would bring lower initial and operating costs and a faster turnaround to the customer. The solution included an air-cooled chiller, rooftop heat pumps and VRF units. The rooftops feature a heat recovery rotary wheel option to guarantee a heating option in summer if needed and remove the need for and the additional cost of roofcurbs.
The installed system creates a robust foundation for efficient cooling and heating across the terminal and related spaces. Trane’s solution also incorporated advanced control strategies designed to optimize system performance and support sustainability objectives.
Results
By combining high-capacity equipment with proven reliability in mission-critical applications, Trane delivered a technically strong solution aligned with the needs of a major transportation facility.
The project
- delivered reliable, high-performance air-conditioning for the main terminal and administrative and service building spaces, helping the airport maintain a comfortable and well-conditioned environment for both passengers and staff.
- enhanced indoor air quality
