Challenge
A large hospital in Holland needed a temporary solution to supply comfort cooling for patients and staff in critical areas such as the MRI unit, surgical wards and recovery rooms. The hospital was awaiting delivery of a new water-cooling system but there was a delay from the customer’s supplier. A solution was needed to ensure no disruption to services.
The hospital’s existing cooling system is housed in a plant room which is only accessible from the rooftop. This meant any temporary chiller replacements would need to be installed at ground level with hoses and power cables mounted up the side of the building and connected to the existing system via the rooftop access point.
Solution
The local Trane Rental Services team recommended two units providing a total capacity of 900kW with the installation of:
• 1 x air-cooled screw chiller CGAF 100
• 1 x air-cooled screw chillers RTAF 185.
An additional generator was also recommended as a contingency should the main power supply fail.
Trane Rental installed the two chillers at ground level. A temporary scaffolding structure was used to mount the hoses and power cables up the side of the hospital building for the connection to the existing system.
Results
Trane Rental’s robust and efficient solution has ensured continued services at the hospital with no interruption. The Trane Rental chillers have performed as expected and the customer has not experienced any breakdowns. Close collaboration between Trane Rental Services, the contractor and the hospital has resulted in a highly successful installation.
