Challenge
A Madrid data center was looking to increase the cooling capacity of its building. The client's goal was a sustainable "green" solution with low GWP refrigerant which would facilitate an extension of their cooling system without affecting normal day-to-day activity. The project would involve installing new units in a specific location where space was relatively limited.
Excellent service capability was also an important criteria for the client.
Solution
Trane's solution was to install four RTAF 280 XE units with total Glycol-Free cooling. The extra efficiency chillers provide a sustainable solution with a total cooling capacity of 4000 kW.
Using R1234ze refrigerant, which has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below one , was a key differentiator in helping the customer with his sustainability goals.
The Total Free Cooling option allows to take advantage of low ambient conditions to help cool water in the HVAC system.
Another important factor was Trane's ability to solve the limited space issue. This involved innovative piping design and installation.
Trane's long history of excellent service with this particular client was also a deciding factor.
Results
In addition to the 11 RTAC and three RTWD air-cooled chillers already installed on site, we have now supplied three Sintesis RTAF air-cooled chillers equipped withfree cooling. We have also been able to include the new units within their existing maintenance contract.
The data center has had no problems with any of the chillers we have installed for them since they first became a client in 2006. Exceptional efficiency and reliable equipment mean piece of mind and less energy consumed for lower electricity bills.
